    Just like the season before, the Star started the league slowly, picking up only one point from the first three games. However, after losing to Oakley United in January they embarked on a thirteen game unbeaten run with twelve wins and one draw at home to Kinnoull. That draw was to prove costly since despite beating Musselburgh Athletic home and away, the title went to Olivebank by a margin of only two goals. Second place though did mean promotion to the Superleague for the first time.

    The Scottish Junior Cup brought further success. After a bye in the first round the Star were drawn against old rivals Arniston Rangers and a crowd of 550 saw Star win through a goal by Gareth Hutchison. After further good home wins against Benburb and Larkhall Thistle, the Star travelled to Lanark where they fought out a 2-1 win with goals from Thomson and Britton. The quarter-final against Rob Roy was a close game, but the men from the west proved to be just that bit better on the day and advanced to the semi-final.

    Silverware was secured in the form of the League Cup though. Stuart Roseburgh put Star ahead in the final at Creamery Park, Bathgate, only for Camelon to equalise with a penalty in the last minute. Goalkeeper Chris Hill was the hero in the penalty shoot out saving three and sending the League Cup to New Victoria Park for the first time in 12 years.

    UNDERDOGS Newtongrange Star lifted the Dechmont Forklift Cup at Creamery park in Bathgate last night with a penalty shoot-out win over Super League Camelon.

    The Premier League side had been within seconds of winning the match in normal time but recovered from the massive blow of conceding an injury-time penalty – converted by Martin Jack – to prevail in the shoot-out.

    It was justice done as far as Newtongrange boss Graeme Armstrong was concerned.

    He said: "That decision, which was very debatable, took the shine of what was a terrific performance from us tonight.

    "Of the three penalty decisions during the game that was the weakest of them all and the other two were refused.

    "It's been a long time since we won any silverware but we deserved it tonight.

    "We lost Tom Britton after a very bad tackle and that left us exposed but young Ross Fairbairn stepped in and did superbly."

    Camelon are gearing up for a late push in the Super League title race and were clear favourites.

    But Star wanted to see how they could fare against one of the big guns and took the game to the Falkirk side from the start.

    Their pace unsettled Camelon and players like Grant Meaney and Stevie Thomson caused havoc for their jittery defence.

    Star should have opened their account in the 22nd minute when they forced their way into the Camelon box but the ball didn't bounce nicely for any of the strikers and the chance was lost.

    Camelon did come into the game more as half time approached and Star keeper Chris Hill gave a glimpse of what was to come when he threw himself full length to palm a terrific shot from Andy Dick round the post.

    The second half started with Camelon on the back foot and this time Newtongrange wouldn't be denied.

    Stuart Roseburgh, who had been having a quiet game, suddenly burst into life. He turned in from the left and drove at the heart of the Camelon defence before the ball fell to Gareth Hutchison. His shot was blocked up into the air only to fall nicely for Roseburgh who slammed it home via the far post.

    That meant Camelon had to come out and attack but this left space at the back for Meaney and Hutchison to exploit.

    Between them, they had two glorious chances to finish the game but blew it on both occasions.

    It was then backs-to-the-wall time for the Star but they were holding out when, in injury time, Stuart Cringean went down in the box.

    Despite the Star protests the referee awarded a penalty and Camelon substitute Martin Jack stepped up to blast the ball home to take the game straight to a penalty shoot out.

    Both sides scored with their first kicks but Camelon missed the next when Hill saved.

    Star scored to take the lead but there were no more goals scored as both teams missed every kick.

    When Camelon missed their fifth penalty there was no need for Newtongrange to take any more and the Star players raced to keeper Chris Hill, who had saved three penalties.

    Afterwards Hill said: "Coming to Newtongrange has been a great move for me. To collect silverware like this is what I came here for.

    "Former Star keeper Jim McQueen was in during the week helping me with penalties and it worked out great.

    "We showed tonight we can compete with the best teams in the Super League and that's our next goal – promotion.

    "It would have been hard on us if we had lost tonight because we were the better team. We worked our socks off and we won the cup because of it."

    Goalscorer Roseburgh added: "It was glory time for me, but it was a great performance from everyone tonight.

    "The ball fell just nicely for me after Gareth's strike had been blocked.

    "Up to then I wasn't having my best game but, after scoring, the confidence just flowed.

    "That was my most important goal for the club but I hope there's more to come this season.

    "We're now concentrating on promotion because we feel we can give something to the Super league."
